Video: Matchbox Valentine

This week on WDRB in the Morning, I showed viewers how easy it is to turn a matchbox into an adorable personalized Valentine.  And then Sterling ate the chocolate.  Good times.  Watch and see.

Video: Repurposed Jewelry Organizer

I was invited on WDRB in the Morning this week to show how to make this fun and easy repurposed frame jewelry organizer.  All you need to make your own is an old picture frame, mesh screening or chicken wire, and some hooks or knobs.  Assemble it all together and it makes the perfect organizer for your earrings, necklaces, and bracelets.

Craft E Magee and I are on WDRB twice monthly showing simple, affordable crafts you can make yourself.  Check out D.I.Y. Louisville’s event page for our next appearance.  And, as always, you can watch our videos on YouTube.

Video: Make a DIY Fall Leaf Bowl

This week on WDRB in the Morning I tried to show Sterling how to make a bowl using silk leaves and Mod Podge.  If Sterling can do it, you can too!  Check out the video to see how fun and easy this craft project is to make.

You can see the full DIY Leaf Bowl step-by-step tutorial here.  To make this yourself, you’ll need a bowl to use as your form, silk fall leaves, plastic wrap, and Mod Podge.  Cover your bowl with plastic wrap, brush on a layer of Mod Podge, and then begin adding your leaves.  Keep adding Mod Podge and leaves until you have a full covering.  Let the bowl sit overnight to dry, and then peel away from the bowl and plastic wrap.  That’s it!

Don’t forget, if you’re in the Louisville area you can catch me and Craft E Magee on WDRB in the Morning twice a month.  Our next craft segments will air on Wednesday, November 20th at 7:45 & 8:15am.  If you can’t watch live, check out my YouTube channel for all of the video segments.  Thanks for watching!

Happy fall DIY’ing!

Halloween Cheesecloth Ghost Video

Last week I was invited to WDRB in the Morning to demonstrate the Halloween Floating Ghost DIY.  Take a look at the video to see how easy and fun it is to create this friendly ghost for your home.

First, you need to create a ghost form from a soda bottle, Styrofoam ball, and wire.  Then you’ll need to drape the form with cheesecloth leaving lots of extra fabric on the front and back so that the ghost will stand once it has dried.  Next, generously spray the ghost with liquid starch.  Once it has dried, remove the ghost from the form and create a ghost face from black felt.  Display on any table or hang from the corners of your room.  So simple, and spookily adorable!

Happy Halloween!

Video: DIY Halloween Owl Wall Decor

I took my Halloween owl plaque to WDRB in the Morning this week.  To make this adorable Halloween decoration, all you need is a wooden plaque, paint, scrapbook paper, and Mod Podge.  You can download the owl template at kiki(verde).  It all comes together quickly and is so cute hung amongst your décor or propped up on a shelf.

Louisville locals can watch crafts with D.I.Y. Louisville and Craft E Magee twice monthly on WDRB in the Morning.  We’ll be back on air with more Halloween crafts on Wednesday, October 23rd at 7:45 & 8:15am.  If you can’t tune in, check out our YouTube pages where we share all of our craft segments.

Happy Halloween crafting, DIY’ers!

Video: How to Make Aluminum Stamped Jewelry

This week I shared my tutorial for making aluminum stamped jewelry on WDRB in the Morning.  Take a look at the video to see how easy it is to make this cute personalized jewelry.  To save on cost and to be a little more environmentally friendly, I also showed how easy it is to create the charm blanks from a recycled aluminum can.  Using the paper punch leaves the edges surprisingly smooth.

As always, it was such a fun morning crafting on WDRB in the Morning with my friend Craft E Magee.  If you’re local, you can see our next craft segments on Wednesday, October 9th at 7:45am & 8:15am.  If you can’t watch the show live, you can always view our videos on YouTube.

Football Party Table Setup Video

Yesterday Craft E Magee and I displayed our Football Rivalry Party on WDRB in the Morning

We decorated our football party table with our two local teams, Louisville and Kentucky, but you can use these easy ideas to create a similar table for your hometown games.  These ideas also work great for a Super Bowl Party.  Simply create a  football field using green felt, and masking tape to create the field lines.  Keep your table visually appealing by creating a mirrored effect on each side of the faux 50-yard line.  We did this by using the exact same setup on each side of the table in the alternate team colors.

Check out the video to see more of our tips for creating this fun-spirited party table.  You can also download Craft E Magee’s Louisville and Kentucky team spirit party printables for free on her blog.

Remember, our craft segment airs on WDRB every two weeks and you can watch each of my morning show segments on my YouTube channel.  (And Craft E Magee’s YouTube channel, too!)

DIY Back to School Organizer Video

Remember the cardboard drink holder turned DIY homework caddy tutorial I showed yesterday?  Well, that also happened to be my demonstration project for my WDRB in the Morning segment this week.

Take a look at the video to see how easy this project  is to make.  All you need is a drink holder and chalkboard paint and you’ve got a versatile school supply caddy for your kids to carry to their homework station.  Kids love to paint, so allow them to paint on the chalkboard paint and decorate the carrier themselves.  Doodling on the sides of the carrier will probably distract them from wanting to actually do their homework, but who can blame them?

Craft E Magee and I are the recurring crafting specialists on WDRB in the Morning.  We demonstrate simple and affordable crafts that everyone watching at home can complete.  Our next segment airs on Wednesday, September 11 at 7:45am & 8:15am.  We would love to have you tune in!  If you’re not in the local viewing area, you can catch all of my craft videos on YouTube here, and Craft E Magee’s videos here.

Happy crafting, DIY’ers!

Easter Crafts on WDRB in the Morning

Boutique Style Easter Basket #diy #easter #craft

This morning Craft E Magee and I demonstrated Easter crafts on WDRB in the Morning.   Participating on WDRB is seriously one of the most fun experiences we have ever had.

I loved Kim’s boutique Easter baskets that she made last year, and I wanted to create one in the same style for my daughter this year.  She picked out her colors and I love how it turned out.  Here is the video clip of me demonstrating how to spruce up your plain Easter baskets:

Also this morning, Craft E Magee demonstrated her adorable Easter hand puppets. (Full tutorial and free printable templates found HERE).

Make and Wear: Je t’aime

freezer paper stencil heart Je t'aime shirt

The temps right now are somewhere between 20-degrees and freezing-to-death, so this blurry indoor shot of my shirt will have to suffice for the moment.

After making a simple freezer paper stencil heart shirt for my daughter this week, I thought I needed a more grown up version to wear myself.  I have been loving all of the large heart shirts that seem to be in fashion right now, but thought a smaller heart with a nod to my upcoming spring trip to Paris would be a better fit for me.

I made the design in Word and used freezer paper to make the stencil, but I cheated and ran this image through my Silhouette cutter instead of cutting by hand.  Dear Silhouette, Je t’aime.

Have you ever made freezer paper stencils?  You can watch my video demonstrating the method on WDRB in the Morning HERE.  Such a fun project!

I post my outfits here to show off my thrifty and handmade wears. Plus, I like cute clothes. Make It: Cinnamon Applesauce Ornaments

Yesterday I had an amazing opportunity to be on a local morning TV show, WDRB in the Morning, with my super talented crafting buddy Craft E Magee.   We demonstrated glitter glass ornaments and also cinnamon applesauce ornaments.  Here is our video for the cinnamon ornaments:

Cinnamon Applesauce Ornaments

To make the dough you’ll need:  1 cup ground cinnamon, 1/4 cup applesauce, 1/2 cup glue.  Mix it all together until a dough forms.  You may need to use your hands to get it mixed up, as the dough will be slightly dry.  Let sit for 1 hour.

Flatten the dough and use a rolling pin until the dough is 1/4 inch thick.

Use cookie cutters to cut out shapes.

Poke a hole for hanging in the top of each shape with a straw.

Bake in the oven at 200-degrees for 1-2 hours, turning halfway through.  Keep in until the dough has dried completely.  Alternately, you can leave out on a cooling rack overnight to dry.

Once the shapes have cooled, use glue to adhere glitter.

Place a ribbon or hook through the hole and hang on your tree.

Do not eat these, and do not make fun of me for stammering at the end of the video.  Have you ever made these before?  They are so fun for kids to make and I hope you'll try them this holiday.

Great Day Live

Alternately titled, The Day Kim and Julee Didn’t Totally Blow It On Live TV

Kim and I were invited to show a Halloween party set-up on the local morning show Great Day Live.  We are both super chatty and we lean a little to the goofball side, but click on the video to see how we act when we’re trying really hard not to humiliate ourselves.

We were so excited to be on the show today and had a great experience!

Are you planning a Halloween party this weekend?

Sponsor Spotlight & Giveaway: Miss Happy Pink

We are so excited to introduce you to our friend and local Louisville artist, Miss Happy Pink!  Miss Happy Pink is seriously one of the sweetest gals we have met in a long time, and we couldn’t be more thrilled to share her art with you plus a fabulous giveaway (!!).

To learn more about Miss Happy Pink, check out our interview below, plus watch the adorable video that shows Miss Happy Pink working on her screen print collection.  How can you not love Mr. Moustache Cat?  Don’t forget to submit your entry in the giveaway below!

Miss Happy Pink

Once upon a time, there was a girl who liked to create cute things. She doodled, sewed, made, created, and covered things in glitter. Then she met a boy and fell in love. He inspired her and encouraged her to share her smiles with the world. MissHappyPink: For People Who Like to Smile.

We asked Miss Happy Pink a few questions, and here is what she told us:
I'm really excited about my new fall prints! They will be available between mid to late October. Also, me and my fiancé, Angryblue, are working on our first collaboration together! It will debut at Ultra-Pop's Halloween-themed group show (Things That Go BUMP in the Night) on October 20th.
The most challenging aspect of running my own business is time & money; There is never enough of either. There is always so much to do not only professionally, but personally, so finding a balance between them is key. When you run your own business, you never stop working. You're always brainstorming, coming up with new ideas and thinking about ways to change or evolve. The hard part is making it all happen within your budget. You learn to get creative and that's where DIY get's it's name!
Something silly about me:  I'm terrified of moose. I collect Hello Kitty everything. I feel naked if my toenails aren't painted. I sometimes eat ice cream for dinner because I'm an adult and I can. My art can be purchased online at www.misshappypink.com and locally in Louisville there are a few stores that carry some of my work: Ultra-Pop, WHY Louisville, Hey Tiger and The Hanger.

Derby Hats: Workshop Recap

derbyhat1_1

While the rest of the country might be going about their business as usual, it’s Kentucky Derby week here in Louisville.  This is pretty much our excuse to stretch out the most exciting two minutes in sports into a city-wide two week celebration.  When you celebrate the horses in these parts, a lady has two choices in headwear attire:  go big, or go home.

This week D.I.Y. Louisville joined with Craft E Magee to host our first ever Derby Hat Workshop.  Getting together with a wonderful group of ladies and piecing together big, fancy hats and fascinators should be tops on any Derby lover’s list.

derbyhat4derbyhat5derbyhat6

I love that each of these headpieces has their maker’s personality.

The workshop was a lot of fun;  We made new friends, ate delicious cupcakes, and laughed our way through deciding which way to turn our feathers and at what point too many accessories became too much.  (Never too much, in Kim’s opinion!)

derbyhat7 derbyhat8derbyhat9 derbyhat10

If you weren’t able to attend our workshop but would like to know how to make your own Derby hat, Craft E Magee has very generously made a video tutorial showing all of the pieces you need, along with steps and tips to add accent pieces and build your hat.

A big thanks to our friend Liz (Craft E Magee) and all of the ladies who joined our workshop!
