Birchbox: August Review

Hey Birchbox!  I’m so glad to see you!  I’ve been waiting all month for my sample sized beauty fix!

August 2012 Birchbox Review

What’s new with you? You’ve been to beauty school, you say? Well go on with your bad self, Frenchie!

What do they teach you in beauty school?

August 2012 Birchbox Review

How to shave your legs, moisturize your face, smell good, keep your eyeliner from smudging, and then to wash your hands when you’re all done?  Cool.  Sounds like the type of beauty school I might actually pass.  I’ve always said clean hands were the essence of beauty.  Better smooth legs than pink hair, I hear.

August 2012 Birchbox Review

My favorite part of Birchbox beauty school?  Learning how to apply the stila waterproof eye liner.  That’s good stuff.  Also, it glitters.  Maybe it will help disguise my crows feet.

August 2012 Birchbox Review

You must go to the Beauty School of Odd Assortment, but I still think you’re pretty awesome, Birchbox!

This months box came with:  Schick razor & coupon, full size stila eye liner, Juicy Couture perfume, Caldrea hand soap, Yu-Be moisturizer.  Want to get your own Birchbox each month?  You can sign up with my referral link HERE.

June Birchbox Review

june birchbox

I’m a jetsetter girl at heart, so I was thrilled to discover that Birchbox dropped its geriatric gig and redeemed itself with a first class upgrade this month.

june birchbox

At first opening of the box, we are given a little gift for the man in our life as a reminder that Birchbox is now offering a male version of their monthly service.  It is not ironic that I know a lot of male flight attendants who would love just such a service.

Here is my full spread:  Comodynes self-tanning towels, Masqueology pore minimizing mask, stila bronzer, Stainiac lip and cheek stain, John Varvatos cologne for my man, and a glorified baggie from tili.

My favorite product is the Stainiac lip & cheek stain, although I’ve only worn it on my lips and not on my cheeks. Because why is it weird to wear a lip gloss on your cheeks? I tried to get a picture of my puckered lips wearing the gloss, but I couldn’t get any self-photos that didn’t look like I was cougar-ing it up for a MySpace profile.  You’ll just have to trust me that the product is nice.

I can’t decide if I like this bronzer as much as I am mesmerized by the little spirally globs floating around in the tube.  The product is great, actually, but it’s maybe a little bronzier than my pale face is accustomed to.  I’ve yet to bravely wear it outside of the home.

So now I have to ask Birchbox, What’s up with the glorified baggie?  Is it to flaunt your stylishness as you send your travel size liquid toiletries through the airport security screening?  Except that your toiletries must be in a clear plastic bag for security screening, so please spare the 200 anxious travelers lined up behind you and save this bag for another purpose.

How about you?  Do you Birchbox or similar?  How do you feel about your items this month?

May Birchbox Review

may 2012 birchbox

Apparently, the fine folks at Birchbox have pegged me as a geriatric.  I know this because three of my five beauty products this month are for the mature crowd.  And by mature, I mean old lady.

Let me just clear the air right now.  I totally signed up for Birchbox because I wanted to be cool try fun and cool beauty products.  Trends, if you will.  Neon polish?  Yes, please.  A bright new color of eyeshadow with glitter to replace the same boring pink Clinique I’ve been wearing for years?  Bring it, I’m ready.

But instead of exciting and hip, my May Birchbox shouted, “Slather on this neck firming cream and pipe it down, old lady!  Leave those funky fresh trends to the young cool cats you’re old enough to litter.”

I hear ya, Birchbox. I hear ya loud and clear.

There was a lot of hype over the Gossip Girl theme this month.  Gossip Girl.  Doesn’t that just make you know you’re going to get a box full of fun?

may 2012 birchbox

Other boxes had full size Stila cosmetics.  I got…mature hair care products and neck firming cream. Waa-waa.

may 2012 birchbox

Algenist firming and lifting cream, Kerastase shampoo and masque for mature hair, Miss Dior Parfum, Dior mascara, and a notecard/envelope set.

For mature hair.  Just typing that makes me want to shake my cane at a gang of whippersnappers.

I’m actually glad for the mascara, and I always appreciate stationary pieces (clearly preferring handwriting to texting, old lady style).  The Kerastase and Algenist are good quality products, and the sample sizes are really nice.   To be fair, I think this was a nice box worthy of my subscription cost, but the items are lackluster and not at all what I was hoping for.  Maybe they thought my poor old heart couldn’t take too much excitement this month.

Do you subscribe to Birchbox or a similar service?  How did you like your box this month?

Birchbox Bandwagon

Who, me?
birchbox

Don't be alarmed, but that flash of light you just saw was me jumping right on board the Birchbox bandwagon.

birchbox

For those of you who may not know, Birchbox is a pay-for-samples subscription program.

Glorified samples, is what it is.

birchbox

But I like samples.  And I like mail.  And I like samples in the mail.

birchbox

I got a 3-month subscription for my birthday (thanks, mom!) to see if I think it’s worth continuing to pay $10 a month to receive.
This month my goodies were: Viva La Juicy perfume, Befine skincare, June Jacobs Perfect Pumpkin Enzyme Polish, Show Stoppers clothing sticky tape, and neon green Color Club nail polish.
birchbox

I was not disappointed with my first box.  Do I think the contents are worth $10?  Well, no, but you’re paying for a certain anticipation.  A certain fun.  A certain what will I get this month oooh, neon polish!  Love it!

birchbox

This mint green nail polish reminds me of mint chocolate chip ice cream every time I look down at my nails.  I love that.

Do you do Birchbox or a similar subscription?  How do you like it?
