Wear It: Handmade

Don’t look too close at these pictures or you’ll see my goose bumps and extra long arm hairs standing straight up.    It was freezing, but I really wanted to show off this fabulous skeleton cameo necklace by Louisville jewelry artist Under Sixes and I thought you might be able to see it better if it wasn’t hiding beneath a parka and two infinity scarf layers.

I was inspired by Suzanne at Style Files to pull out some stripes this week after she shared them as one of her top 10 wardrobe essentials.  I’m also thinking this Marion polish from Julep should be a wardrobe essential.  What do you think?

Julep Box- October

This month’s Julep box was awesome!  I loved the super cute extras that they included for Halloween. I received three nail polishes, a dark metallic red called “Caroline”, a black glittery polish called “Leslie” and a silver crackle top coat called “ Glenda”.  The colors are perfect for Halloween.  I also got some fun extras including an orange glitter and a black glitter that can be added on top of my wet polishes to change the look, and a little bag of candy corn!  As always I love the quote card and the idea card they put in each box.  If you can’t read the one I got it says “Never put your faith in a prince.  When you require a miracle, trust in a witch”- Catherynne M Valente.  Once again if you are interested in Julep I can’t stress enough how much I love their polish.  It stays on like a dream and I typically get 5 or more days out of my polish, that’s with me working in a preschool and washing my hands 500 times a day.  You can use code PENNY to get your first box for only $.01 if you follow this link: JULEP.  Subscriptions are 19.99 a month, but they allow you to skip any month you don’t want and you get to preview you nail polish colors every month before they ship.  If you don’t like the colors you can switch to another box.

Julep Box Review- September

This month’s Julep box was a little different as it was a collaboration with designer Trina Turk.  In my box instead of the usual three nail polishes or two nail polishes and a remover, I received two polishes and a mascara.  Also this month I changed my box from my normal “It Girl” style to “Boho Glam”.  I just wasn’t feeling the colors in my normal box and the ones in the “Boho Glam” were just so good.  The colors I received were “Gunta” which is described as an “elevated blue crème” on the website and “Popova” which is a “youthful kelly green”  The mascara is espresso brown.  I was a little worried about the mascara because I have sensitive eyes and usually use brands for sensitive eyes, like Neutrogena.  Well, it turns out that this is better than the stuff I normally wear. I forgot I even had it on!  The polishes are great transitional colors for Fall.  I know I will get a ton of wear out of them. I haven’t tried them out yet but I know I’ll be happy.

Julep Box Review- August

I got my August Julep Box this week and guess what?  It looked a little something like this:

If you don’t know the significance of this box let me explain.  Each month Julep gives away golden boxes to some of their Mavens.  You have to have paid for the month and it’s totally at random.  The golden boxes contain the entire collection of polishes for the month.  So you can imagine the crazy squeal that came from me when I opened my mail box.  It was pure excitement folks!  I was already smitten with Julep and their super long lasting polishes and after getting this awesome surprise I have to say that they are pretty much one of my favorite companies ever.  I received 10 polishes, a container of nail polish remover and a cute little tote bag along with the usual style cards. This month’s “theme” was metallic, so all of the colors are metallic.  I got a fabulous selection of polishes, none of which were anything like what I already had.  I painted my nails first with the “Sienna” color which is an amazing chrome like color and I have had so many compliments on it.  I can’t wait to see what colors next month’s box will have!  I’m getting pretty addicted, I already requested that the husband build me a nail polish shelf.

Julep Box Review

After seeing all of Julee's cool Birchbox reviews, I decided to jump on the subscription box bandwagon myself this month.  I looked at a lot of different options and finally found one that seemed right for me.  I chose the Julep box, which is a nail polish subscription service.  Every month for 19.95 you get a box valued at $40 with an assortment of Julep polishes and other products.  The cool thing about this service is that you get to preview your box each month before it ships and you have the option to switch to a different style or skip the month all together.  When you first sign up you are given a style quiz to help the company match you with the style of box you will receive.  My quiz results were "It Girl"  The colors in my selection were right on for me as far as colors I am drawn to in nail polish.  I generally like bold nail polishes and these certainly fit the bill.  I received Lily- a bright fuchsia, Daisy- a sunny yellow and Sasha- a fun coral.  There were also two toe separator things in the box.

As far as the nail polish goes, it went on really smoothly and evenly.  I applied two coats and was super surprised that I didn't need more on the yellow.  It's the first yellow I've ever had that didn't go on streaky and need 5 coats.  As far as wear-ability goes I haven't worn it long enough to know yet, but if the application is any indication it will be a great wearing nail polish.
