Weekly D.I.Y.: Mermaid Birthday Bunting

Mermaid Birthday Bunting Banner Pennant

This is actually a two-week old DIY project, but I never shared it on the blog.  And seriously, something this cute deserves to be shared.

If you follow us on Facebook, you may have seen an instagram snippet as I was working on this project.  This mermaid birthday banner was made for a dear friend who was celebrating her daughter’s 2nd birthday at a splash park with a very simple mermaid theme.  Seems every project I’m working on lately includes this beautiful aqua/tiffany blue, and it’s making me very happy.  I usually don’t go too crazy with all of the ribbony, girly fluff, but I love this pink ruffle ribbon and the silver sequined ribbon.

What projects have you been working on lately?  If you leave me a link, I’d love to come check them out!

Sponsor Spotlight: Buttons by Becky

Buttons by Becky in Louisville, KY

For the past few weeks I have had the pleasure of working with Becky of Buttons by Becky on a special button order for the D.I.Y. Louisville Craft Collective.  When I went to pick up our order, I was amazed at all of the accessory options Becky has available for her buttons: necklaces, earrings, key chains, flip flop bedazzles, badge reels, zipper pulls, hair pins – literally, anything you can think of!  Becky has books full of images that can be turned into buttons, but she can also make custom orders from your images.  This is great for sports groups or schools that are looking for unique logo fundraiser items.  Check out the Buttons by Becky Facebook page to see pictures of the many buttons Becky has created.

My favorite item in her shop is this interchangeable magnetic necklace.  I’ve been wearing it nearly daily since I received it.  With this necklace, you have almost endless possibilities for matching your accessories to any outfit.  If you want to change the color or the style, you just snap on a new button and you instantly have a new, coordinating accessory.  And even if you don’t have the perfect button design for your outfit, the medallion can be worn flipped around showing the etched bird and branch design on the back.  So versatile!

You can see that I picked out a set of Fleur de Lis buttons for my necklace, but you can bet that I’ll be adding more button tops to my collection soon.

Becky sells her buttons at many craft and art shows locally, but she also takes custom mail orders. Rumor has it that her next venture includes etched leather bracelets. I can’t wait to see what new designs she has in store!

What We Wore

What We Wore Wednesday

I found this Susana Monaco skirt at the thrift this summer  for $3, and it still had its $60-something dollar price tags attached.  Wha?  I snatched it up as quick as I could and sent a little thank you out into the universe to all the people that donate awesome clothing to thrift stores everywhere.

The downside of this skirt is that it is UPS-brown, and finding tops to wear with it other than white t-shirts has been a challenge.  Since I’m still not spending any money on new clothes, I’m trying to rotate through some items in my closet.  I felt ok with this outfit until my husband questioned why I had my shirt knotted like that.

Easy Black Bean Burgers

Easy Black Bean Burgers

These really should be called Super Crazy Easy Awesome Black Bean Burgers, ‘cause that’s what they are.

I admit, we eat way too many of the boxed veggie burgers because they are a major convenience.  But I’m trying hard to limit our processed soy consumption, so we have been whipping up these yummy black bean burger bad boys at least once a week.  They come together in minutes, are made with items you probably already have on hand, and cost only a fraction of the prepackaged variety.  That’s a triple win in my book.

The original recipe comes from The Happy Herbivore, which you can find HERE.  She even has a video, in case you’re frightened of the kitchen, like me.  Click on over and check it out (and look for many other great recipes while you’re over there).

What I love about this recipe is that you can adjust the ingredients fairly easily based on what you have in your kitchen.  We have found a variation from the original recipe that suits our tastes better, as we found the original too mustard-y for my picky kid.  Here is the adapted recipe that works for my family’s tastes:

1 can black beans, drained but not rinsed, 3/4 smashed with a fork
2 tbsp ketchup
2 tbsp dijon mustard
1-2 dashes of hot sauce
1tsp garlic powder
1tsp onion powder
Fresh diced onions (no measurement, just a pinch, or not too many that my daughter can see them and refuse to eat)
1/3 cup instant oats (I use thick steel cut oats whirled through the food processor a bit)

Mix it all together.  Divide into 4 patties.  Cook at 400-degrees on a greased cookie sheet.  7 minutes on one side, flip, then 7 minutes on the other side.  I like to melt cheese on mine, but eliminate that if you’re vegan, obviously.

Enjoy!

Make It: Faux Coral

How to make faux coral

I knew that I wanted to add some coral-type decorations t0 our Under the Sea party table, but I also knew that I didn’t have a lot of money to spend.  I went poking around the dollar store and found these branch bundles near the silk flowers.  They were perfect for the vision that I had.

How to make faux coral

For my faux coral I used:  branches from the dollar store  and coral colored paint.  It was that easy!

You can find just about any color of inexpensive craft paint you want at most craft stores.  Did you also know that you can get a sample of any paint color at Lowes for $3?  The cost is a little more than craft paint, but Lowes is nearer to my house, so it all evens out.  I made two bunches of faux coral for $5, plus I have quite a bit of this beautiful coral paint left over.  Win.

If you want the coral to be shorter and fuller, you could cut the branches in half.  I actually wanted the height to balance out the sides of my dessert table.

Make It: Under the Sea Party Desserts

Under the Sea Party Desserts Instructions

I have had a couple of requests for explanations on some of the details on our Under the Sea party.  I’m going to do a couple of series of Make It posts this week to help you plan your next party.

First up,  everyone’s favorite part of a party: desserts.  Our Under the Sea desserts included cupcakes with chocolate shells, coral candy, chocolate covered pretzel “shells”, oyster cookies, and marshmallow fish pops.  All of these were very easy to put together.

Under the Sea Party Desserts Instructions

1) Marshmallow Fish Pops, idea from Pinterest

You’ll need:  marshmallows, white chocolate bark, blue food coloring, graham cracker crumbs,  Goldfish cookies, sugar pearls, and sucker sticks.

~Melt your white chocolate bark (I use the microwave), add in a drop or two of blue food coloring to get your desired color.  Push your pop sticks in the marshmallow, and dip in the white bark until coated.  While the chocolate is still wet, dip the bottom of the marshmallow pop into crushed graham cracker crumbs.  Add your fish cookie and sugar pearl “bubbles”.  Set on wax paper to dry.

2)  Seashell Cupcakes

For these, I used a box mix and canned frosting.  Baking doesn’t get fancy in my house.  For the shells I used blue candy melts and white chocolate bark in a shell candy mold.  Blue sprinkles on top.  I squirt my icing on with one of those handy icing tool kits like this one.

3) Chocolate Covered Seashells

I’m pretending they look like seashells, anyway.  Pretzels dipped in melted white almond bark, sprinkles and sugar pearls on top.  My daughter made these (mostly) by herself.

4)  Oyster Cookies with Pearls, idea from Pinterest

You’ll need: vanilla wafers, vanilla frosting, candy pearl (Sixlet)

The ones I saw on Pinterest were made out of bigger cookies, but I needed nut-free cookies which I couldn’t seem to find.  Vanilla wafers are peanut free.  I thought they would be too small, but I really love the cuteness of the small cookie.  I also found the blue vanilla frosting by Pillsbury at Target, and it was the perfect color I needed.  (Used for the cupcakes, too.)  If you can only find white vanilla, mix in a couple of drops of blue food coloring.  I used my icing tool to squirt a dollop of frosting on the wafer, added the top wafer, then added the Sixlet pearl.  So cute and crazy easy.

5)  Coral Candy

You’ll need:  Chow mein noodles, white almond bark, red and yellow food coloring, sprinkles, mini cupcake papers

~Melt the white chocolate bark in the microwave, once melted add in your food coloring.  I added red, then drops of yellow to get the color I wanted.  While the chocolate is melted, add in your chow mein noodles.  Add in enough noodles to get a nice coating on the noodles.  You don’t want them too “wet”.  Using a spoon, scoop the mixture into the mini cups (or on wax paper if you don’t want to use cups), trying to get the top noodles to stick up, like coral.  Sprinkle on your sprinkles while the chocolate is still wet.  Place in the fridge to speed up the cooling.

I used crushed graham cracker crumbs on all of the dessert plates to look like sand, and I sprinkled around some of the sugar pearls.

None of these desserts were time consuming at all.  The coral candy and seashell pretzels can be made a couple of days ahead of time and stored in an airtight container.  The marshmallow pops and oyster cookies should be made the day of, or as close to the day of the party as possible so the cookie doesn’t get soggy.

To see pictures from the entire Under the Sea party, look HERE.

I hope you enjoy making your own seaside desserts for your next party!

I love the color combination of the aqua and coral with the sandy-colored accents.  Pinterest was a big help in fueling the inspiration and finding easy dessert ideas.  This may be my favorite party yet.

Birchbox: August Review

Hey Birchbox!  I’m so glad to see you!  I’ve been waiting all month for my sample sized beauty fix!

August 2012 Birchbox Review

What’s new with you? You’ve been to beauty school, you say? Well go on with your bad self, Frenchie!

What do they teach you in beauty school?

August 2012 Birchbox Review

How to shave your legs, moisturize your face, smell good, keep your eyeliner from smudging, and then to wash your hands when you’re all done?  Cool.  Sounds like the type of beauty school I might actually pass.  I’ve always said clean hands were the essence of beauty.  Better smooth legs than pink hair, I hear.

August 2012 Birchbox Review

My favorite part of Birchbox beauty school?  Learning how to apply the stila waterproof eye liner.  That’s good stuff.  Also, it glitters.  Maybe it will help disguise my crows feet.

August 2012 Birchbox Review

You must go to the Beauty School of Odd Assortment, but I still think you’re pretty awesome, Birchbox!

This months box came with:  Schick razor & coupon, full size stila eye liner, Juicy Couture perfume, Caldrea hand soap, Yu-Be moisturizer.  Want to get your own Birchbox each month?  You can sign up with my referral link HERE.

Make It: Rock Necklace

Rock Necklace Kids Craft

My daughter is a collector of rocks.  She can easily spew geological terms at me that I needed an entire college level geology class to learn.  (And even then, I didn’t learn them that well.)  She stops to pick  up rocks everywhere she goes and we have even purchased dozens of  them in national park gift shops from here to California.  Laundry day leaves me with handfuls that I have pulled from her pockets, and I  find even more squirreled away in every nook of her room.  I try to be respectful of her collection, but what do we do with all of these rocks?  We have painted them, made rock gardens outside, placed them in planters…and now we are making necklaces from her favorites.

Maybe you also know someone who would love a rock necklace?  Great!  You need:  A cool rock (I’m told that a fossil is the ultimate!), jewelry wire, twine or ribbon.  A small pair of pliers is helpful but not necessary.

Rock Necklace Kids Craft

Start with the wire at the top of your rock and leave a little excess, then tightly twist your wire around your rock horizontally and vertically several times, bringing it back to the top when you’re satisfied with the look.  Cut your wire.  Twist the two ends together at the top to form a loop to thread your twine through.  Push the pointy edges down with your pliers (or fingernails, like we did).
Now you’ve got a new rock necklace to sport like a geological nerd rock star.

Happy kid crafting!

Picnic Pasta Salad with Lemon Vinaigrette

Picnic Pasta Salad with Lemon Vinaigrette

If you invite me to a potluck or a picnic, chances are 99% that I’m going to bring a pasta salad. Because you can’t really go wrong with a pasta salad, and it requires no actual cooking.  And I don’t actually cook, so there’s that.

This is my copy-cat version of the the delicious Trader Joe’s pasta salad I had a few weeks ago. This pasta is really all about the feta cheese and lemon vinaigrette.  The garbanzo beans gives this enough protein to qualify as a whole meal.  Bonus!

Picnic Pasta Salad with Lemon Vinaigrette

Picnic Pasta Salad with Lemon Vinaigrette

1-lb box rotini pasta, cooked according to package, drained and rinsed in cold water

1 can garbanzo beans, drained & rinsed

1 container feta cheese (4 to 6 oz)

Fresh diced veggies (Use whatever you have on hand and what you love.  I used 2 roma tomatoes, 1 homegrown cucumber, 1/2 red onion, 1 orange bell pepper.)

Lemon Vinaigrette Dressing

Juice from 2 fresh lemons

1 tbsp Dijon mustard

1 1/2 tsp ground sea salt

3/4 tsp ground black pepper

1/2 cup olive oil

Add lemon juice, Dijon, salt and pepper to bowl, and slowly whisk in the olive oil.

Picnic Pasta Salad with Lemon Vinaigrette

You can toss your dressing with your pasta, veggies, beans, and cheese and let it all marinate together.  Or if your family is weird like mine, you can keep it all separate and drizzle on the vinaigrette when you’re ready to eat.

Happy picnicking!

What We Wore

what we wore

Does this shirt make me look…pregnant?…Twelve?  I am neither, so I now remember why I found it forgotten and pushed way to the back of my closet .  I’m trying really hard to “shop my closet” with renewed excitement over some of my barely worn items, as I’m trying to save money for our upcoming trip to Renegade Chicago.  Certainly that’s worth avoiding the clearance racks for next couple of months, maybe?

what we wore

I am in love with this necklace from Buttons by Becky.  It has a magnetic base with interchangeable button pieces, giving you literally thousands of possibilities for pairing it with outfits.  So cool.

Picnic at Bernheim Forest

Summer’s greatest allure is that she fools us into thinking that the long lazy days will never end, and yet here we are prepping ourselves for the end of the season.  Our kids go back to school in one week, and just like every year, we’re pondering where all the time went.  How does it fly?  I’ve yet to be able to solve that mystery.

bernheim forestbernheim forest

Kim’s summer bucket list included an outing for our families and some dear friends that we don’t get to see often enough.  We were finally able to make that happen at Bernheim Forest and enjoyed the day picnicking, hiking, and watching our kids marvel at Mother Nature’s beauty until their fingernails were caked with dirt.   The epitome of a perfect summer outing.

Are you ready for summer to come to an end?  Are your kids back to school yet?  Summer’s end is always bittersweet for me and I find myself  wishing for just a few more extra weeks before we settle into our fall routine.

Flea Off Market

flea off market

On Saturday, Kim and I met up for The Flea Off Market here in Louisville. This is a once-monthly street market with artists, vendors, musicians, food trucks, adoptable pets and generally happy people all milling about.

The weather was gorgeous, we bought cute stuff from cute artists, ate amazing veggie tacos, and pretty much had a bomb-diggity day.

flea off market flea off market

Kim’s leather cuff was not purchased, it was made by her amazing dad.  Sadly, he doesn’t sell his stuff.  We’re trying very hard to change that.  Kim did purchase some felt hairclips from The Hanger gals, and I purchase these felted acorns from Paper N Fibers, because, really, how cute are they?

flea off market flea off market

The handmade jewelry from LindasyLou is just adorable.  I kept eyeballing the key necklaces, but finally settled on this little orange cutie.  I’m loving orange right now.

flea off market flea off market

I am dressed literally head-to-toe in Target.  It’s an illness.  The hotdog vendor was out of veggie dogs (sadness), so we walked to Taco Punk for lunch.  Beer cheese queso pretty much sums up the awesomeness of that place.

If you’re in Louisville you should definitely check out The Flea Off next month. Like The Flea Off Market on Facebook to keep tabs on the next event.  Maybe we’ll see you there!
